Washington Commanders logo history
The Washington Commanders unveiled their name and block-W logo on February 2, 2022. The primary mark uses burgundy and gold with angular cuts in the letter. It followed the temporary Washington Football Team identity used in the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

The older emblem is the profile-and-feathers design associated with Washington’s former Redskins name, in its 1983–2019 version. The current W replaces the portrait with an initial. Washington used the temporary Football Team W during the intervening 2020 and 2021 seasons.
What does the Commanders W stand for?
The W stands for Washington. Its angular construction is the primary logo, separate from the team’s round crest and wordmark. Burgundy and gold provide continuity with the franchise’s earlier identities despite the change in name and symbol.
When did the Washington Commanders start playing?
The franchise began in Boston in 1932 and moved to Washington in 1937. It used the Washington Football Team name for two seasons before becoming the Commanders in 2022. The profile emblem represents the franchise’s earlier Redskins era.
