Carolina Panthers logo history
The Carolina Panthers introduced the current panther-head logo in 2012, their first logo revision since entering the NFL. The update changed the eye, mouth and blue highlights and removed the enclosing outer border. The black cat retains its open mouth and right-facing profile.

The original Panthers logo has a continuous blue border framing the head and neck, prominent whiskers and a different eye and mouth. In the current version, blue shapes define the animal more directly against the background.
Is the Panthers logo shaped like North and South Carolina?
The logo is a stylized panther head. The resemblance to the Carolinas is a popular fan interpretation. The team’s 2012 design announcement describes refinements to the eye, mouth and border; it leaves the state-outline interpretation unconfirmed.
When did the Carolina Panthers start playing?
Carolina was awarded an expansion franchise in 1993 and began playing in 1995. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, the team represents both Carolinas. The original logo was used during the franchise’s first Super Bowl season in 2003; the revised mark was in place for the 2015 NFC championship season.
